The cause of osteoporosis 

Bone is living tissue; it is continuously built by the osteoblasts (young bone-forming cells) and broken down by the osteoclasts (cells that break down bone and dispose of it). How strong bones become is largely determined by hereditary factors.

  • Age:  The process of bone formation peaks around the age of 30, when bone density is at its highest. From that age, the breakdown of bone tissue increases and the density of bone tissue slowly decreases. Advancing age is thus one cause of osteoporosis.
